From the Principal's Pen
We have had a great term and look forward to Term 2. Our inaugural Culture Day was a huge success. The school dynamic is changing and we are becoming more multi-cultural.This adds a real richness to the school. It was lovely for children and teachers to be able to showcase their cultural identity. We had Welsh ponies, taekwon-do, origami, chinese dragons and a range of other cultural activities. A group of Japanese students from Orewa College performed a traditional dance for us. The highlight of the day was the hangi. The pit was dug by our onsite contractors and lots of people helped make it a success. Special thanks to Shianne and Justin for organising the hangi for us. It was delicious. We will definitely make this part of our calendar again.
Please note that the school site is closed during the holidays. There is a demolition and removal of an old classroom scheduled. Signs will be in place to notify people.
Have a great holiday everyone. Stay safe in the storm!

Strep Throat
Please be advised that there have been confirmed cases of Strep Throat within the community. If untreated, this can possibly lead to very serious medical complications. If your child has a sore throat, please have them checked out by a doctor to have an accurate diagnosis.
If your child has had to borrow a change of clothes from the office this term, please ensure these items are washed and returned to the office. Thank you.
A reminder to check all your childs clothing is named - we have removed the lost property area (due to health and safety), in the hope all items can be returned to the correct child as named on the clothing item (all other items will only be kept for a small length of time so please ensure all items, including footwear, and jackets, are clearly named).
Dairy Flat School App
The Board of Trustees, in response to the local lockdowns at the end of last year, have had a Dairy Flat School App developed that will send notifications directly to parents phones. We are aware that some people may not check emails regularly and at the moment this is our only means of notification. We hope that all parents will download the App and allow notifications. The App links directly to the website so you can read the newsletter, send absences and check information as well as receive messages.
Go to the App store. Search Dairy Flat School. Download the App, allow notifications.

A very big thank you to Shianne May and Justin Knight who helped organise and run our Hangi last Friday for Cultural Day. This was a fantastic success and we really appreciate their efforts in making this happen. Thank you to all the parent helpers who also gave their time to helping us on the day. Also, thank you to Angela Gray and Kyla Lucas for supplying us with the Tea Tree wood for the Hangi.
Thank You ARLEC
We have been donated a number of torches and batteries by Leigh Nicholas and Therese Ramsay from Arlec company. This is a very generous donation and we will be able to use these for trips, camps and within the school. Thank you very much.
Mumps Information from Ministry of Education
The Auckland Regional Public Health Service is managing a mumps outbreak in Auckland. More than 35 cases have been confirmed so far and more than half of these are occurring in children and teens aged 10-19 years. “I urge parents to check with their doctors to ensure their families’ measles mumps and rubella vaccinations are up to date. I recommend this is done before the school holidays. Vaccination is free and it will protect your child and the community,” says Medical Officer of Health Dr Michael Hale. Mumps can spread quickly among those who are not immune, particularly in schools. A single child with mumps at secondary school could cause an outbreak, because immunity in that age group is well below the national average. “If parents do not organise vaccination quickly, their children’s learning could be disrupted. We are in the midst of an outbreak and already large numbers of students are scrambling to catch up on school work after falling ill with mumps for several weeks,” says Dr Hale. Most people recover from mumps, but it can have serious complications. Although rare, infertility can occur. The disease can also cause inflammation of tissue surrounding the brain (meningitis), inflamed testicles or ovaries and deafness. “The best way to avoid getting an infectious disease like mumps is to ensure you are fully immunised with the MMR vaccine,” says Dr Hale. Learn more about mumps on the ARPHS website and about mumps vaccination (see their PDF.)
